How to plan your elopement in The Netherlands
An elopement is the perfect alternative if you don’t really want a traditional wedding, or if the Covid-19 restrictions push you in a different direction than a big wedding. Eloping in the Netherlands isn’t as common as it is elsewhere yet, but it soon will be, I can feel it! Why elope? Well, an elopement wedding focuses on your love and vows, and it is the easiest and most budget-friendly way to get married. And so much fun!
Why elope in The Netherlands? Well, first of all, it’s a travel hub. Almost everyone speaks English and it’s super easy to fly to Amsterdam from whatever corner of the world you’re in. Because of its flat landscape and well-developed infrastructure, various reliable ways of public transportation are available. It could be the perfect start of your Europe trip or honeymoon, if you want to explore more of Europe. The country has a rich and interesting history, which is still clearly visible in many old cities. And if you are more into nature: however small the country, you are never far away from the nearest national park! But how do you go about planning an elopement in The Netherlands? Here are some steps to follow:
7 steps To Plan Your Elopement in the Netherlands:
Define the style of your elopement. Do you want a city elopement in Rotterdam? Are you thinking of getting married in front of the windmills near Kinderdijk? What vibe do you want to create? Look around and search on Pinterest for ideas and create mood boards, or follow your gut feeling! TIP: Junebug Weddings’ Pinterest board is a great place to get inspired!
Plan a date. Even thought the weather in The Netherlands can change quickly, from May till September the weather is mild, with long days and short nights. In the summer, it’s only a little before midnight that it actually gets dark, and temperatures usually range between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius. The winter is the opposite: if you want daylight, make sure you plan everything before 4pm. During the winter, it freezes only occasionally, but wind and rain can still make it feel very cold outside. Perfect for a nice warm fire in your cabin though! And of course, you can always pick a date based on previous memories or life events, like your first date or kiss.
Search or scout for locations and set a route for your elopement: where do we want to go? How do we get there? This blog is an example of an elopement near Amsterdam, but The Netherlands has much more to offer. You can take a nice long walk through the dunes by the Northsea, or hire some bicycles and explore the city of Amsterdam. You can have an industrial wedding, or tie the knot in front of the typical windmills. The possibilities are endless! See the photos below for my number one favorite spot to elope in the Netherlands: The National Park Zuid-Kennemerland, near Bloemendaal. It offers wide views, sand dunes, pine forests and little lakes. You might as well go for a swim in the sea afterwards!
Search for cool places to stay. If you’re eloping without any official witnesses, try find something romantic, it will add to your overall memory. If you’re planning on staying in one place with your witnesses, try one of the many cabins and apartments that are available through AirBnB, or on Booking.com. Fancy something special? Make sure you check out this website with stunning cottages and tiny houses in The Netherlands! You can even sleep in a tree house, why not?!
Find local businesses and vendors that can help you with the details. Do you want to rent a special car? Would you like some good flowers? Everything you want for your wedding should be perfect.
If you’re a fan of good food, make sure to reserve a spot at one of the local restaurants. Especially the nice and romantic places book out quickly, and you don’t want to be told of on your wedding day. Whether it is lunch before your elopement, or a dinner afterwards or the next day, don’t take the risk and book your spot in advance. Happy dining!
And last but not least: Book a photographer to capture your dearest memories of your elopement adventure. A memory caught in a photograph, for the people at home, the people who love you, and for you. Especially for you! The photographs will be able to tell your story and get you back to those feelings, those special moments. Check out my special elopement package!
